Support the New England National Scenic Trail

The New England National Scenic Trail (NET) is a 215-mile hiking trail route that has been in existence for over half a century. The NET runs from Long Island Sound in CT to the MA/NH border, comprised primarily of the Mattabesett, Metacomet, and Monadnock (M-M-M) Trail systems. In Massachusetts, the white-blazed trail follows the historic route of the Metacomet-Monadnock trail. Here are some upcoming opportunities to support this historic trail.

Galehead Hut Backpack

Submitted by Heather Wyman, AMC Berkshire Family Programs Chair

On May 17-18 2014 I led an exciting family backpacking trip to the White Mountain National Forest with 12 Scouts and fathers (AMC members as well) meeting Karen and Al from the PVHC at Galehead Hut. Planning the trip was tricky because originally, 21 people were paid or scheduled to hike, and some of the group needed to cancel last minute, including one parking lot casualty due to a stomach bug. Thanks goes to Lori Tisdell of the PVHC, who just finished her Culinary degree at HCC, who helped design a working menu of dinner and breakfast foods for the self-serve hut. Muah!

The event is free.

"In Your Backyard"- New Family Hike and Activity series started up in the Berkshire AMC Chapter

Pitcher Brook Falls

"In Your Backyard" is a novel way to introduce families to local adventures. Meeting on the last Sunday of the month, our hikes have included Noble View's Pitcher Brook Falls in Russell, MA, Sanderson Brook Falls in Chester, MA, and Mt. Greylock! Ages have ranged from toddlers to grandparents.

Atop Mount Greylock

Each hike has a theme from conservation to climate change, and the length adjusts to the ability of the hikers, typically from 2-6 miles. Please Contact Heather Wyman @ SquareRoot123@Gmail.com for more information on participating or with suggestions.

AMC Trains Outdoor Leaders, Volunteer Naturalists, and Trail Volunteers

Berkshire Chapter Member Potluck, Saturday, March 23rd

Photo of the Florence Civic Center

Are you looking for great local things to do, and new activities to try? Please come and see what AMC Berkshire is all about, or come see old friends!

It's all happening on Saturday, March 23 at 6 PM at the Florence Civic Center at 90 Park Street in the center of Florence (directions). We’ll check out this historic building and setting, new to us. Ideally, we'll get a chance to socialize outdoors on the lovely wrap-around porch. We’ll have trip leaders and committee tables to show members and visitors alike where we’ve been, and show how you can get out on the trails, rivers, lakes, and mountains around us. There will also be folks from the Appalachian Trail Committee and Noble View Outdoor Center to talk about the fun of getting involved with trail work and outdoor education.

Family Outings

The Berkshire Chapter Family group schedules an outing somewhere in Western Massachusetts every month all year long. The activities are indoors and out and include hiking, rock wall climbing, and camping. Parent/guardian supervision is required at all events. Suggestions and additional events are welcome to be added to the current schedule. Information about the events is sent to the email messaging group list and is provided in the Outings Schedule section of this web site under Berkshire Chapter Events.
