Support the New England National Scenic Trail

The New England National Scenic Trail (NET) is a 215-mile hiking trail route that has been in existence for over half a century. The NET runs from Long Island Sound in CT to the MA/NH border, comprised primarily of the Mattabesett, Metacomet, and Monadnock (M-M-M) Trail systems. In Massachusetts, the white-blazed trail follows the historic route of the Metacomet-Monadnock trail. Here are some upcoming opportunities to support this historic trail.

Volunteer on the NET

The AMC Berkshire Chapter is the principal trail steward of the NET. The hard work of many dedicated volunteers helps keep the trail maintained and available for our enjoyment. Spend a few hours or a full day helping with corridor definition, blazing, repairing signage and shelters, and whatever else needs to be done. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, whether you are an experienced trail crew leader or a complete beginner. Trail work parties range from basic maintenance patrols to more intensive projects including rock work, bridge-building, and shelter repairs. Tools, training and personal protective equipment are provided.

Family Work Project Weekend at the Mount Grace Shelter

While most trail work days are family friendly, we’ve planned a special family project weekend at the Mount Grace Shelter in Warwick, MA on April 23-24. Come one or both days, and you can even camp overnight if you want to make a weekend of it. If weekdays are better, there’s also work to be done April 21-22 preparing for the weekend.

Trail Hopper Cider Launch Event

The NET is collaborating with Artifact Cider Project to produce a limited release called Trail Hopper Cider. This cider uses locally grown apples and features information about the NET on the label. The cider is being promoted with some “views and brews” style events later this year. Keep an eye out for those if you’re interested in finishing off a hike on the NET with a nice glass of cider. First, though, there’s a launch party planned for Sunday, May 1, at Pine Hill Orchards in Colrain, MA. As well as the cider, there’ll be a cookout, orchard tours, wagon rides, and apple inspired food.
